CAR WINDOW TINTING LAW IN NEW ZEALAND

In New Zealand, window tint limits are dictated by the NZ Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi). For standard passenger cars, the minimum legal Visible Light Transmission (VLT)—the amount of light passing through the glass—is 35% for front and rear side windows, and the rear windscreen. Full windscreen tinting is strictly prohibited.Specific Vehicle Equipment requirements apply depending on your vehicle's setup:Front Windscreen: Full aftermarket tint film is illegal, even if it’s a clear, 100% transparent UV-blocking film. The only exception is a small anti-glare sun strip at the top, which cannot extend below the sun visor's edge when folded down.Front Side Windows (Driver & Passenger): Must have an overall VLT of at least 35%.Rear Side Windows & Rear Windscreen (Passenger Cars - Class MA): Must also maintain a minimum 35% VLT.Vans, Utes, and SUVs (Non-Class MA): If the vehicle has external mirrors on both sides, rear windows can be tinted darker than 35% VLT.Mirror & Damaged Tints: Highly reflective or mirror-like tints are prohibited. Additionally, bubbles, peeling, or fading that restricts visibility will result in failure of a Warrant of Fitness (WoF).Important Warning: Factory glass is often already lightly tinted (e.g., 70% VLT).
